Residency Information
Alumni Residency, February 2026: Open to Workshop Alumni Only
The Break: March 2026: Open to any artist recovering from alcoholism, drug addiction, and other addictive disorders.
Debut 40: April 2026: Debut 40 applicants may be under contract but cannot be scheduled to publish their debuts until 2027. Chapbooks and self-published works do not count towards this requirement.
Residents can stay for any length of time, within their awarded month.
We will award two residencies for our Alumni and Break programs. Debut 40/General will each have one selection.
The Tin House Residents (we will select two) will be housed in one of two 900-square-foot studio apartments next to the Workshop office in Northwest Portland. The apartment includes a full kitchen, bathroom, and a small living room/office with WiFi. There are several coffee shops, restaurants, and grocery stores within walking distance of the apartment and access to public transit.
Please note this is a second-floor apartment that is only accessible by stairs. If a Resident cannot use the apartment due to accessibility, we will work with the Resident to provide alternative housing options (at no cost to the Resident).
Partners and children are welcome to accompany Residents. Though the studio apartment features one queen bed, Cribs/Pack ‘n Play/Air Mattresses will be available upon request.
Each Residency comes with a $1200 stipend, a 100$ Lyft credit, and a public reading/reception at Bishop & Wilde.
Application Requirements
1. Fill out the questionnaire
2. Attach a writing sample from the project you will be working on during the Residency:
- Fiction and Nonfiction: One unpublished writing sample, 6,000 words or less. A short story/essay or a portion of a novel/NF project may be submitted.
- Poetry: Up to six unpublished poems totaling no more than 20 pages.
- Please follow the genre requirements in the original language and submit your translation along with the original text.
- Graphic Novel: Up to 30 unpublished pages from the project. Please email workshop@tinhouse.com if you are unable to upload your file.

General Eligibility Requirements
- Must be an alum of a Tin House Program
- Working on a full-length manuscript (or a novella/chapbook) in any genre.
- You must be 21 or older by the time of your Residency.
- Former Scholars/Faculty are eligible to apply.
- International writers may apply.

As part of our Pay It Forward program, you have the option of helping cover the cost of another writer’s application fee or contributing to our Residency Travel Fund, which helps provide travel assistance to our Residents. Thank you!
